Dark Islanders is operating with a 2,5D-approach to flatness and depth related to a new perception of space and body. Volumetric Video offers the chance for a second lens to enter and navigate the scene. What is revealed is a vision strafed with blind spots and occlusions, one in which the viewer is lifted to navigate a non-space of thick inky black. The audience is invited not only to get “behind the scene”, but even “behind the screen” or “behind the skin”, an inside-out experience of the human body.

Joel Hurlburt (SE) lives and works in Sweden since 2003. He holds a BFA in 3D Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston, and received a Master of Fine Arts from Konstfack, in Stockholm. Since 2014, his practice-based research has focused on materials and methods for sculptural processes, the link between the physical analog and the digital manifestation, and developing the study of what he calls diffuse objects. His meandering working references include, but are not limited to, phenomenology, perception, physiology, industrial engineering, literature, linguistics, and philosophical games. Timo Menke (DE) is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Stockholm. Investigating the relationship between the observer and the observed, subject and object, recorder and projector, lens, and screen, his practice is increasingly aiming at a dark holistic approach. Using photographic and moving images, documents, objects, drawing, and plant cultivation he approaches, renegotiates, and speculates about our common nature-culture, to highlight and transform an increasingly dark matter: body, earth, space. He graduated from Konstfack in 1999 where he was also an Assistant Professor in the Art Department in 2004-2014.
