COLD SINGLE (2019) is an experimental short film by Taiwanese Director MEL HSIEH in collaboration with French Artist ITEM IDEM (Cyril Duval) and featuring a musical score by American Producer DUTCH E GERM. This film is a symbolic study on modern Chinese culture and performance art based on Bombing Master Handdan (God of wealth). The aesthetics of violence paints the video frame with explosions, inner vision, and thought-process behind this dangerous ritual.
Mel is an Experimental Filmmaker and Visual Artist. He graduated from Central Saint Martins (2009) and SVA (2015). Founder of AniMel Studio to collaborate in the art, film, music, and fashion industry with the National Theatre, Fashion Week, and Art Fair. His films have won numerous international awards and exhibited at LA Frieze Art, Scope Art Miami, Paris Asia Now Art Fair, Red Dot, D&AD, NY Video Art & Experimental Film Festival, etc. His works related to subculture, subjects of identity, and body by exploring avenues of expression that combine New Cinema and Contemporary Art.
ITEM IDEM (Cyril Duval) is an artist, designer, and filmmaker, producing work situated within the intersection of conceptual practices, visual communication, branding, industrial design, and public art. Duval’s work has been exhibited at Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Garage Center for Contemporary Culture (Moscow), K11 Art Foundation (Shanghai), MoMA PS1 (New York), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), New Museum (New York), Palais de Tokyo (Paris) along with presentations & commissions for Art Basel (Hong Kong), Frieze Art Fair (London), Performa 13 (New York) among others. He is also the founding member & co-president of SHANZHAI BIENNIAL. Duval lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan.
